‘A Whisker Away’ Will Make You Cry If…

Do you know what it feels like to come from a broken family? Have you experienced the pain of being unhappy even as a little kid? Have you ever felt betrayed at such a young age when you don’t even know what betrayal means? If yes, then please don’t watch the anime movie A Whisker Away unless you want to tear your heart out.

As you are reading this, you don’t know my tears are falling uncontrollably… Oh… Oh wait. Now the tears aren’t falling anymore… thanks to the first paragraph. Now it’s all over.

Let me just blow my nose first. blows nose *

So anyway, as I was saying let me write a movie review of A Whisker Away. It was just released on Netflix last month, on June 18 to be exact. I suggest you watch it first before you finish reading my review.

Warning: Some spoilers ahead.

Read at your own risk. 😊

πŸ”ΈπŸ”Ά Some of The Characters πŸ”ΆπŸ”Έ

β—™ Miyo “Muge” Sasaki

The lead female character who can turn into a cat. Her nickname is an acronym of “Miss Ultra Gaga and Enigmatic”.

β—™ Kento Hinode

Muge’s crush who is unaware of what happens to her.

β—™ Yoriko Fukase

The best friend of Muge.

πŸ”ΈπŸ”Ά Trailer πŸ”ΆπŸ”Έ

πŸ”ΈπŸ”Ά Short Synopsis πŸ”ΆπŸ”Έ

Muge seems to be a happy go lucky and obnoxious girl. She’s a normal high school girl but one day a suspicious cat/man mask seller sold her a cat mask. Her crush who keeps disregarding her at school loves Taro the cat though. How will her one-sided love become mutual if she lives the life of the cat?

πŸ”ΈπŸ”Ά The Review πŸ”ΆπŸ”Έ

As usual, I watched this without even watching the trailer. Geddemmet. I should have if I wanted to at least prepare to understand the story a bit but nooo. I chose to watch based on a paragraph synopsis and the movie poster. 🀦

Serves me right, I cried my eyes out at several points of A Whisker Away. I was not prepared at all. I felt attacked. πŸ˜‚ Oh the pain.

β—™ Characters & Story

Muge’s story is so relatable. Thanks to Netflix this somehow doesn’t have an entirely Japanese feel to it. I mean it is set in Japan with Japanese characters and made by a Japanese animation studio but it is so relatable you’d think it wasn’t an anime at all. That or maybe I haven’t been watching much dramatic anime films at all. Haha. (Thanks but no thanks Grave of the Fireflies.) Yeah of course good thing it has English subtitles so I was able to understand everything. πŸ˜…

The story is true-to-life and fantastic. It also makes your heart ache for Muge. Sometimes you would even pity her (or yourself) because of what she’s going through. And then you realize, oh she’s kinda you and you’re kinda her except for the cat transformation.

I won’t spoil the story that much because it is so precious to watch. Thumbs up to the screenwriter Mari Okada and the producers of this animated film. Keep it up Ms. Okada. πŸ‘

Unfortunately some people might not be able to relate to the lead character. Don’t fret, there are others you can relate to. You have the separated parents and the step mom. You have the best friend and the crush. Hey even the cat characters can be relatable.

A Whisker Away is a fun but painful story of friendship, young love, regrets and escaping the life you live. Yeah maybe to some it may seem like a pathetic story but that’s only if you cannot relate to the characters.

My bitter and critical mind would say, this film promotes love as an escape to the harsh realities of life. Like everything will be better and okay as long as you’re in love and loved in return. 🀦 Well sorry but that kind of happiness doesn’t last long. Sooner or later it will go back to the harsh reality of living a human life again. Being human means experiencing pain and hardships from time to time. It is somehow understandable from their point of view as the characters are mostly teenagers.

On the other hand, my hopeful and sometimes romantic or always fantasy-fanatic side would say it is a nice movie. Of course there are also funny moments in it. It’s not a sad story at all. Seriously it’s only sad when you feel Muge’s pain and yours combined. Other than that why will you cry? Because you pity her? She does not need your pity, I’m sure of it. πŸ˜„

The real adventure starts when we see the hidden cat world. Oh yeah. That’s one of the best parts. Haha. Anyway just watch it already, don’t make my review stop you.

βœ… Character development is superb.
βœ… Story is heart-touching.
βœ… First love element.
βœ… Fantasy elements and cats involved.

What more can you ask for? πŸ˜‰

β—™ Voice Acting

Of course without the voice actors we wouldn’t be able to feel the character’s emotions. They all did a great job. For example, Yoriko crying over Muge’s experience surprisingly made some of my tears fall! Come on! Some scenes suddenly became blurry without warning while I was watching! Had to wipe my eyes and blow my nose several times. How dare this anime!!! πŸ˜ πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‚

β—™ Animation, Design & Music

Well the animation looks smooth and pleasant. No complaints there. Costume and character design are perfectly Japanese. Cat world is also fantastic and imaginative enough. I mean who would have thought there’s an invisible cat world like that? Wow.

And the music plus soundtrack? Oh it’s something to love too.

β—™ Rating

What do I really think of this animated movie? Let’s see…

  • Characters & Story: 10
  • Voice Acting: 10
  • Animation, Design & Music: 10
  • Makes you cry: -2

Yeah I just added that last part. I mean I hate how it caught me unaware. I didn’t like how it made me cry and feel pain without me noticing. Like my eyes would just water as pain filled my heart!!! Hey, I watched it hoping to feel good but Surprise!!! It made me CRY a RIVER!!! β‚¬!’$:!β„’Β©^Β©_]Ο€(=%!

Ok ok not much of a river, maybe it made me cry for a few minutes at a time. Geddemmet!!! πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŠπŸ‘Š

So there you have it. Watch at your own risk. You will cry but it really depends on if you can relate to Muge or not. 🀷

Or maybe if you’re having a tough day some scenes will just make your tears fall easier. This quarantine and COVID-19 situation really sucks you know? It makes us feel depressed at some point. No one is immune to it.

It’s like our life is suddenly on hold however much we want it to move forward. We feel like we don’t have control over anything at all. On top of that, we humans are so stubborn and selfish, we don’t care if we spread the virus plus those in power still damage the environment like there’s no tomorrow. πŸ’” Ah real life.

Anyway, lemme know which scene affected you the most if you’ve already seen it. If not then well what are you waiting for? πŸ˜‚ What do you think of the movie based on my review?
